Be Kind to Cyclists

bekindtoCyClists is a bicycle safety awareness campaign for the Corpus Christi and surrounding area. The campaign will focus on specific issues that impact both motorists and cyclists on the road.

The campaign is currently focused on the following two issues:

  • Alignment of all the bike lanes maintained by the City of Corpus Christi with the 2006 Texas Manual on Uniform Control Devices (TxMUTCD). The TxMUTCD governs the design, signage and pavement markers used for bicycle lanes in Texas. None of the six bike lanes (Ocean, Holly, Upriver, Baldwin, Flynn, Commodores) maintained by the City currently meet the minimum standards as prescribed by the TxMUTCD.
  • Enforcement of Corpus Christi Municipal Code 53-97 which prohibits cars from parking in the bike lanes on Ocean Drive. Motorists must be educated on the dangers to cyclists from parking in the bicycle lanes The bike lanes on Ocean Drive are part of the Bay Trail and as such are actually preferential bike lanes that must accommodate pedestrians and cyclists. Parking in an area designated for hikers (pedestrians) and cyclists (bikers) is prohibited by municipal ordinance.

bekindtoCyClists is currently working with the Bicycle and Pedestrian Subcommittee, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, the City Traffic Engineer and the Transportation Advisory Committee to resolve the issues with TxMUTCD alignment and parking in the Bay Trail.
